The village of Crumlin, now a suburb of Dublin, was just a small village in the late 18th century but held its own race meetings and could call on vast crowds from the city. The first occasion results were included in the Racing Calendar was from the three day meeting from Monday 23rd to Wednesday 25th October 1775. The opening day was disappointing with no horses entered, but on the Tuesday the 4 mile race for aged horses was won by Mr Joseph Shadwell’s Lovely Molly, while on the concluding day the Hunters race also went to Mr Shadwell with Rattler. Although races continued to be held intermittently for the next 13 years, there were concerns about the unruly behaviour with large gatherings, and at the 1790 meeting the cavalry was brought in to prevent the meeting from taking place. The previous year a meeting had been staged on Thursday 24th September 1789 when a large number of people were injured due to fighting breaking out in the crowds. |
